Chenin Blanc at ChaLou: Our Story, Our Site, Our Why

Chenin Blanc has been part of my wine story for a long time. Before we planted it here at ChaLou, I spent time around Chenin in South Africa – tasting it in all its different expressions, seeing how it responded to climate and site and learning how beautifully it can hold both freshness and texture. Those early experiences stayed with me.

When Steve and I began thinking about what varieties could truly thrive on our 900‑metre site in Orange, Chenin kept coming back into the conversation. Planting it felt like a natural nod to the wines that shaped my understanding of balance and detail.

Why Chenin Blanc Suits Orange

Orange is an exciting region for Chenin Blanc. Our cool growing conditions and reliably dry autumns support a longer ripening period, which this variety loves. Even in warmer years, Chenin retains its natural acidity and that freshness is something we value deeply in all our wines.

Our First Expression

For our first release, we’ve explored a more textured expression through short skin contact. Chenin’s high natural acidity gives us the freedom to build texture without losing clarity or drive. Skin contact adds a gentle exotic edge – subtle spice, phenolic detail and a sense of shape on the palate that has always intrigued me. It’s a style that feels honest to both the variety and our site.

Release note:
The Chenin will be released later in autumn and will be available exclusively to our club members.

A Variety with Range

Of course, at 900 metres, some vintages will be marginal. But that’s part of what makes Chenin so compelling. It’s a variety with remarkable versatility and we’re excited to explore its full range here. Whether that leads us toward sparkling expressions, drier styles with tension and precision, or even versions with a touch of residual sweetness.

A Thoughtful Choice

Planting Chenin at ChaLou wasn’t a trend decision. It was a thoughtful choice rooted in experience, curiosity and a belief that this place with its altitude, its cool nights and its long, slow seasons could offer something genuinely new to the Australian Chenin conversation.

This first release is just the beginning. We’re learning, listening and letting the vineyard guide us. I can’t wait to see where this journey takes us.
